Concept Maps for Teaching and Learning

Description:
"A picture is worth a thousand words." "See it this way." "Here's the whole concept." Our brains are wired to take in complex information and make meaning of that information, especially when that information is presented visually. Concept maps can visually represent large amounts of data, provide a holistic representation of a concept, show connections and relationship among data, and enable you to plan and make choices by creating a road map of where you are going and where you have been. By integrating visuals with text, concept maps create a bird's eye view of the subject being presented, constructing a visual approach to communication. This hands-on workshop will provide practical and immediate applications in your courses. Advanced registration is required.

Storyboards for Planning Instruction

Description:
Good instruction does not (and should not) come without careful planning. Storyboards can assist with the development and organization of your instruction by visually outlining all of the elements including lecture, discussions, multimedia, and activities. The planning begins with a series of questions that address what you want the students to learn, what the students already know, what content will be covered, and what activities will be used. The next step is to visually communicate your ideas through outlines, sketches, and diagrams. The completed storyboard acts as a visual map of your instruction that helps organize sequence and highlight content, methods, and strategies and how they fit into the big picture of the entire semester. Bring ideas or a syllabus to begin creating your own storyboard. Advanced registration is required.
