Overview:

Conflict

This is the fourteenth in the continuing series of department chair development workshops sponsored by the Office of the Provost and organized by the Department Chair Development Workshop Planning group. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss mediation as an alternative strategy to address and resolve conflicts effectively in academic settings.

Alice Ralph is a trained mediator with Center for Conflict Resolution, has trained trainers and effected numerous mediations in the Chicago Metro Area, formerly Acting General Counsel of Illinois Department of Human Rights – Intake. Deborah Haliczer provides employee relations services for faculty and professional staff, directs professional development and training programs; licensed social worker. Vickie Gillio completed a Program of Instruction for Lawyers course in negotiation at Harvard Law School, was a board member of the founding Board of Neighborhood Justice Center, a predecessor to the Center for Conflict Resolution (“CCR”), an initial board member of the CCR, and a trained mediator / arbitrator by American Arbitration Association in community dispute resolution.

This interactive workshop will seek active participation by attendees to address evaluation of “ripeness” for mediation, to share best practices for preparation in mediation, and identify factors required for effective mediation. Tentative agenda for the workshop is below:

The workshop is open only to NIU department chairs and school directors. Registered participants will receive workshop materials and refreshments. Advanced registration is required. Please fill out the form below to register for this workshop. Due to the expensive nature of the program and the advance notice needed for arranging food and materials, please register by the deadline and plan to attend the entire workshop.
