This is the tenth in the continuing series of department chair development workshops sponsored by the Office of the Provost and organized by the Department Chair Development Workshop Planning group. The purpose of the morning workshop is to understand what collegiality really is, review best practices in promoting collegiality, discuss the roles and responsibilities of chairs and administrators in facilitating a civil and collegial environment, learn how to assess objectively collegial and civil behavior and how to develop and implement guidelines to foster collegiality in academic departments. The morning workshop will include a presentation for 90 minutes and will be followed by a large group discussion. The afternoon session will provide interested participants an opportunity to have a more detailed conversation with the presenter on specific scenarios on collegiality and how best to handle them.

The workshop presenter, Dr. Robert Cipriano, received his doctoral degree in Therapeutic Recreation with a Cognate Area in Higher Education. He has written two textbooks, and has published 97 journal articles and manuscripts. He has received more than $9 million in grants. He is currently a tenured full professor, and has been a department chair at Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, Connecticut for 27 years. He has delivered more than 200 presentations in the U.S. and Asia. His research interests include collegiality and conflict management/resolution in higher education, chairs' roles in personnel decisions, demographics of department chairs, and disabilities-related issues.
